Mpox in Canada: Lessons learned and future response strategies
Presented in partnership with the Community-Based Research Centre (CBRC).
Presented in English and French with simultaneous interpretation.
This webinar provides an overview of mpox epidemiology and community-based responses, including key lessons, challenges and successes. Participants gain a deeper understanding of mpox transmission and the current global and Canadian situation, while also exploring effective prevention and care strategies. Additionally, speakers discuss how responses led by 2SGBQ+ community-based organizations, clinical leaders and public health can inform Canada’s approach to managing this evolving epidemic.
As part of this discussion, the webinar addresses the two known subtypes of the mpox virus, called clades. Canada’s outbreak, which primarily affected gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men, was driven by the clade II subtype. In August 2024, the clade I subtype spread to multiple African countries, prompting the World Health Organization to declare a public health emergency. While there are no cases of clade I identified in Canada to date, this webinar equips attendees with the knowledge needed to stay informed and proactive in the face of ongoing and emerging mpox challenges.
