Treatment as empowerment: Advancing HIV care with U=U

Since its emergence in the 1980s, treatment for HIV has seen dramatic improvements. With appropriate treatment and care, individuals with HIV can lead long, healthy lives. Antiretroviral therapy not only improves the health of those living with HIV, but also has an effect on transmission.

Undetectable = Untransmittable, U=U, describes the robust scientific evidence that when a person has an undetectable viral load and continuously adheres to treatment, there is zero risk of transmitting HIV through sex.

The U=U message is a tool all health professionals can use to dismantle stigma and empower people to seek and adhere to treatment, thereby caring for themselves and protecting those around them.

This course focuses on the science of U=U and how to effectively spread the message in a clear, stigma-free manner.
