CATIE staff would like to extend our best wishes to Tim Rogers upon his retirement at the end of November 2022. We are sad to see Tim go, as we have been fortunate to benefit from his guidance for more than 25 years, from our early days as a treatment information hub for people living with HIV to our current role as Canada’s knowledge broker for HIV and hepatitis C.

Tim started as a volunteer at CATIE in 1996, joining the staff in 1997 as a researcher. He quickly rose through the ranks, ultimately becoming Strategic Director of Knowledge Exchange and the longest serving member of CATIE’s management team.

Above all, Tim is a visionary. He has had his finger on the pulse of developments in HIV and hepatitis C science, from prevention and testing to treatment and care. He saw revolutions in HIV prevention and hepatitis C treatment in their earliest days, understood their potential and power, and articulated the role that CATIE could play in their implementation. He also guided CATIE’s knowledge broker response to the drug poisoning crisis and broader issues affecting the health of people who use drugs.

Tim’s work has almost always been carried out quietly behind the scenes, but anyone who has engaged with CATIE over the past two decades has felt the impact of his contributions. From early information about HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and direct-acting antivirals for hepatitis C, to CATIE’s endorsement and championing of the “undetectable equals untransmittable” (U=U) message, Tim has ensured CATIE responds to the evolving realities of service providers and their clients.

Beyond his strategic contributions to CATIE, his colleagues will mostly miss the kindness, generosity and calm logic that he brought to his role, and which guided his work ethic and leadership style.

“The organization owes a lot of its current success to Tim’s hard work and dedication over the years,” says Jody Jollimore, CATIE’s new executive director. “We’re wishing him all the best in his well deserved retirement.”

Tim’s position will not be filled, and his responsibilities have been redistributed among other directors at CATIE.
