The Benefits of HIV Treatment

HIV treatment helps people who are living with HIV stay healthy. It does this by suppressing HIV’s ability to make copies of itself. When you take HIV medications as prescribed, see your healthcare provider regularly and maintain an undetectable viral load, treatment:

  • can control the virus and allow your immune system to rebuild itself—the benefits are especially significant if you start treatment early
  • prevents the transmission of HIV to your sex partner(s)
  • allows women living with HIV to have healthy pregnancies and give birth to HIV-negative babies
  • reduces the chance of passing HIV when sharing equipment to use drugs but we don’t know by how much
